They were developing mainframe computer systems hardware and software, using technologies that were once very innovative such as COBOL, FORTRAN and IBM Assembler and such. These engineers were conducting research and development for the large aerospace industry and military in the former USSR. Starting in the 1950s Armenia emerged as the Silicon Valley of the Soviet Union. Engineers in Armenia studied the technical computing systems of the Western Europe, created universities to produce suitable graduates to work in the IT and engineering fields, and designed and produced IBM-clone mainframes.Even the collapse of the Soviet Union didn’t stop the process, but rather fostered the new developments. Skilled professionals in Armenia starting from scratch created their own labs and research centers, and many opened their own companies and rebuilt the IT industry from the bottom up.
